BARDAI BRAHMIN SAMAJ LONDON Presidents Message BARDAI BRAHMIN SAMAJ LONDON
Dear Members We have started another year with new committee, who have very high hopes and aspiration to provide you all with a fun filled year of events. Sadly, their desire to organise events, is however quickly dashed due to non-support from the community. Our organisation in the early days flourished as a result of the whole hearted support and backing received from the community members. I have to commend these individuals who join the working committee, for having the optimism and desire to maintain the momentum. However as experienced in the previous years, these members have sad faces as time progresses, due to lacklustre support and attendance, and for some not to stay on the working committee the following year. Apologies for my pessimism, if we as a samaj do not wake up and revive Bardai Brahmin Samaj London, the outlook is very bleak, therefore my request to you all, is provide your support and make 2019 a year to remember when this dying samaj was brought back to life by your support. Best wishes Jai Shri Krishna! Jai Shri Trikamjibapu! Bhasker Dave

History & Meaning

As the name implies, Navratri relates to the festival of “9 nights”. It begins on the first day of Ashwina of the bright fortnight (September / October). Historically it signifies a triumph of good over evil and a time when the Supreme Lord is worshipped in the mother form of Maa Durga, Lakshmi & Saraswati (female forms)

The day after Navratri i.e. the 10th day after Ashwina, is Dussera which celebrates the victory of Lord Shri Rama over Ravana. Ravana is burnt in effigy, often giant dummies of Ravana stuffed with fireworks are shot with arrows until they blow up before a large, applauding audience.

The most characteristic dances of Gujarat during Navratri are the Raas and Garba dances which are performed at all levels of society by men and women.

The origin of the Raas is traced back to the legends connected with the life of Lord Krishna. It is essentially associated with the agricultural rites. The Raas Garba are performed in Gujarat India on Navaratra; and other important festivals associated with harvest and crops.

Garba  are also performed and are often complex circular formations to represent designs of lotus and other shapes  considered magical religious and auspicious.
